Cabin boy Chris Elliott speaks of handsome boy modeling
Last night my friend and I went to the Chris Elliott book signing event at our local book store, Powells. We first met at 6:00 at Thai Peacock which is one of my favorite Thai food places. The food is spicy and so is the music which is generally very gay sounding disco. S and I ate our food, taking our time and catching up on what's going on with each other. We were only 2 blocks away from the reading and had plenty of time to get there and get a good seat, or so we thought. At around 7:00 pm we walked over to Powells, used the restroom, freshened our makeup and looked around for where the reading was going to be. Powells downtown is a huge place and the reading could have been in any number of rooms. We went directly to the information desk and were promptly informed that the reading was at the Hawthorn Powells location which is over the bridge on the SE side of town about a 20 minute drive from where we were. My heart dropped into my shoes. I don't know how I got the location wrong. I am usually a neurotic checker of the where and when of any event. However, there was no time to stand around assigning blame. We ran to my car and flew across town arriving at the Hawthorn location just as they were refusing to let any more people into the book reading area.
S and I shrugged our shoulders when they said we couldn't go back to the reading. We both walked over towards the nearest book displays and then quickly darted off to the reading area which was close by. However, the crowd was large and we were in back. I was lucky enough to have worn heels, so I was taller than almost everyone and therefore, could see Chris in the wee distance. We could hear him just fine and he was very funny, the kind of funny I appreciate because it's mostly quick jabs at unsuspecting people. For example, one person asked him to do a bit from one of his performances and Chris replied, "I'm not your show monkey". He also said a bit about his show "Get a Life" and about the Handsome Boy Modeling episode which made me think about JC who would have really loved the event.
Chris read a bit from his book and it was hysterically funny. I'm not sure though if it would be funny to read on my own or if it was funny because he was reading it. The book is outrageous and silly. I may buy it to read on the plane to New York. I haven't decided yet. I wanted to get closer to Chris and maybe get a signed book but it wasn't meant to be. The line went on for miles and S had a killer stomach ache. So, we left without getting books. It was still a fun event to go to and a little surreal in a way. There's something so goofy about Chris Elliott that hearing him read from a book, no matter how silly the book is, smacks of strangeness. But, oh how I love the strange happenings.

That's awesome. He's going to be in Houston tonight and I think Austin on Saturday, but I don't think I've got the energy for another road trip this soon.
Do you remember Chris Elliott from the early days of Late Night with David Letterman? (I think I'm about 60 years older than you, so I imagine you might not.) He was great in so many recurring roles, like the "Guy Under the Seats" and Marlon Brando. So, so funny. Here's a recent interview you might like: http://avclub.com/content/node/41488. (Sorry, I don't know how to make that link "live.")
Getting excited for NY?
Luis,
I'm actually pretty close to your age but didn't see Chris on David Letterman. However, he talked about it a lot at the reading and it made me wish I would have seen it.
10 days until NY.
JC,
I think the trip might be worth it but you would have to plan carefully in order to get close. He's very popular.
Oh, that sounds like fun! and LOVE Thai food. I have a great place nearby that's rated in Zagats and it's inexpensive too! Nothing better.
By the way, thanks for the kind words on my blog; it's a work in progress.
I just checked out your profile -- love your movie selections, too. Have you seen Broken Flowers? Maybe you'll get lucky and it'll be showing on your flight to NY.
oh crap.
on the other hand...thai rocks all out. And you still ha a fairly exciting night...so it wasn't a total loss!
Hmm "Broken Flowers" isn't a movie I'm familiar with but I'm going to google it.
Thai food is great, especially when it's cold outside. I'm always suspicious of people who don't eat any spicy food.
broken Flowers is so close to home that's it's scary, you'd like it... familier with Beau Thai?
Oh my, I googled "Broken Flowers" today and saw that Bill Murray is in it. I love Mr. Murray. I am going to have to see the movie toute de suite.
I like Beau Thai and Typhoon. Thai Peacock is less expensive than the other two and a bit less reliable. Some nights the food is amazing and really spicy and other nights it's not as great or as spicy but I kind of like that. It feels like I'm going on an adventure or treasure hunt. Will it be hot? Will it be quality? Will there be disco music? The possibilities are endless.
