Goal

I've decided to run another marathon. My daily running, or I should say bi weekly running, was becoming a chore. One of my running buddies told me about a friend of his who ran her first half marathon after only ever running 8 miles up to that point. My friend, S, talked about how inspired the newbie was and how now that she has successfully run a half marathon, she feels unstoppable. That gave me pause to think deeply about my own running passion or lack thereof.

I remember back to the first time I ran 8 miles straight. I felt as though there was nothing I could not do. Then I ran a half marathon and I felt like I should be on a Wheaties box. Suddenly I was an athlete. My first marathon was stellar, not because of my time which was slow as hell but because I did it all on my own without anyone even at the race cheering me on. The accomplishment led me try harder and harder to be a better runner. and it worked for years. I went from running a 4:50 marathon to running a 4:09 marathon. Then I had a bad marathon followed by knee and IT band problems. It's hard to start from scratch after an injury. I lost the passion somewhere along the way.

I am going to run the Victoria B.C. marathon in October. I'm going to stay at a plush hotel and eat fantastic food. I don't know if my time will be anywhere near 4:09. It will almost 2 years since I ran my last marathon. It's possible my time will be extremely slow. All I know is that I plan to savor the experience.

Hi Michelle. I'm so glad you're posting again, and I'm looking forward to hearing about your training. I just ran my first half marathon, and I experienced that exact feeling of thinking I could take on the world. I wanted to get straight back out on the pavement again, but I have an abductor strain to deal with first (a yoga injury, ironically, after all my running injuries). Good luck!
