Inspiration

I don't play tennis but have tried enough times to know that it requires not just great hand eye coordination and athleticism but also talent. I don't go out of my way to watch tennis on television but any time I come across a game, I watch it. This happened to me the other day. I came across the Wimbledon match between Venus Williams and Marion Bartoli. I got to see Venus win her 6th grand slam championship, a rare feet. Better yet, she won the same earnings the male championship is eligible for. I have long believed that female tennis players should get equal pay. Seeing Venus' win, a historical event, was a great inspiration. I felt like I won something, like all women won something when Venus acknowledged her right to equal pay. See more about the match here.

That's cool, I didn't realize that they were finally paying the women the same. About time!

Venus did great, but I wish she wore something besides underwear. The Williams sisters are awesome players, but they can't dress worth sh*t.

Tennis is so much harder than it looks on TV. I actually did an informal analysis of sports a few years ago and the most difficult sport turned out to be tennis (i.e. it requires the greatest variety of athletic skills in the greatest degree. Football, basketball, and lacrosse were also high).

Regarding equal pay: the reason women weren't paid equally was because the women's matches sold less tickets than the men's, and this was reflected in the prize money. This began to change in the 90s and now the women's game is on par with the men's in terms of popularity and ticket sales.

So it was more about business than discrimination. But a lot of credit goes to Billie Jean King, who has been a champion for equal status of the women's game for decades.
