Absence

I plan to be absent here and am considering deleting this blog but haven't decided for sure yet. I no longer have a regular computer at home. I have a laptop I use for work but I don't lug it home everyday since I commute an hour each way on the train. The fact that I only bring my computer home on weekends limits my available writing time and I find that while I might have time to write something, I don't have time to go read everyone else's blogs. To me the idea of having a blog is creating a community. So, if I can only write but not read other people's blogs regularly then I'm really just journaling.

I will get a new home computer eventually but it isn't on the priority list right now. I've spent the past few months paying off all credit card debt and establishing savings. Next I plan to start investing. Once I've gotten a good start on that, I'll indulge in little luxuries. Yes, I know computers aren't that expensive but believe it or not, they aren't absolutely necessary either.

Over the next few months I will be reading, lifting weights and training for the Newport Marathon.

Credit card debt... ugh. The bane of being young and in America in the 21st century.

It sounds like you've got your priorities in line. I still hope you keep the blog. I thought you were gone for good.

The best way to get a computer is to buy one from someone you know who wants to upgrade. You know it works and it'll be cheap. Therefore, make more nerdy friends.

Another idea is to research top-rated computers 6-9 months before you're ready to buy. By the time you're ready, those models may be discounted to make space for the newer models.

And since I like you, here's a stock tip: TransOcean (NYSE: RIG). It's a good mid- to long-term pick (5-15 yrs). I bought it a year ago and it's gone up 50% already.

Alternative energy is also a good sector, but you gotta do your research so you don't pick a dud.
